about new ways to go public

A lot has changed since the events that inspired the “Window Peeping” story took place. The Internet wasn’t around so the current venues for exhibitionism were not available just yet. I was thinking about the differences between letting someone in your world through a computer or phone camera and just opening the drapes in your apartment. Obviously, unless you limit your audience by going into a private chat room or connecting directly with someone, anonymity plays a big part in this. I was also thinking about the time when “live cams” came around - the kind when someone just had cameras on in their house all they long and you could just tuned in an watch them go about their lives. These were a one-way stream so, in my opinion, closer to the idea I’m exploring in Window Peeping where the person is not necessarily “putting on a show” but “sort of” living his/her life and just letting others “peep in”.

about gods and monsters

Thinking about the whole “gods and monsters” concept and how this might have been shaped by my catholic upbringing. In the original play (Becoming a Rose), a reference to “Incubus” was made in the “Dreams and Fantasies” scenes and, although the concept of how these - dreams and fantasies - are part of the “illusory world of theater”, I would like to explore further into how these “characters” are just “masks” that allow us to free ourselves in the theater.

about creating from within

This morning, looking at old photographs, I felt a bit “nostalgic” about working with models and actors. After mentioning this to a former “muse”, her comments unchained a great number of “thoughts” about not only the difference between working with others - models, actors - and being “my own muse” but also, about how sometimes “necessity” is an artist best guide to our creative journey.

After mentioning this to a former “muse”, her comments unchained a great number of “thoughts” about not only the difference between working with others - models, actors - and being “my own muse” but also, about how sometimes “necessity” is an artist best guide to our creative journey.

The same way that the pandemic opened new ways for me to express through the virtual theater language, living in a remote place without the access to talent for photoshoots, etc.has forced me to search inwards for inspiration resulting in what - in my opinion - perhaps the most honest work I have ever created.

I have always found other artists’ - photographers, painters - self-portraits to be inspiring and, in most cases, their best work. I believe this to be because of the level of honesty in these photos and paintings and because I truly believe that no muse could ever know us and reflect who we are better than ourselves, unless of course - we don’t know who we are.

Self-judgement and fear for the judgement of others play a big role in our transcending and self-discovery process as artist and individuals. Honesty and transparency are often confused - even by us artists ourselves - with the “negative” perception of narcissism and exhibitionism.

As I get prepared to launch The Absolute Creative Space and revisit Becoming a Rose, I’m reminded of how necessity has showed me the path towards becoming the artist I always wanted to be. I suppose - like the popular song says - necessity has facilitated “no distractions” - which I have never thought about it until now - is basically the concept behind my idea of The Bare Character.

BECOMING A ROSE: A NEW BLOOM

A virtual reboot of The Bare Character Studies videos. Actors experimenting with the connection between their instinctual impulses and their rational approach to acting

A series of short virtual theater pieces inspired by Becoming a Rose: An Artist’s Survival Guide According to Jean Genet.

ABOUT THE ORIGINAL PROJECT

Becoming a Rose: An Artist’s Survival Guide According to Jean Genet, was originally devised as a long-format virtual theater production and streamed live at the Hollywood Fringe Festival 2021. Right after the original production, I thought about re-structuring the play and making the three acts in the play as separate shorter performances. Now, I’m proposing a complete new structure - a series of short scenes performed either live or pre-recorded videos - and, a re-devised, evolved concept reflecting my current stand as an artist.

about revisiting “becoming a rose”

Becoming a Rose was without a doubt an intimate and honest exposé of my personal and creative worlds. Every day since this virtual theater piece was streamed live a little over two years ago, I keep going back creatively or emotionally to a scene from the play. Revisiting this crucial moment in my personal and creative journey seems not only inevitable but also necessary.
