THE NOT SO IMMERSIVE THEATER

Physical proximity of an audience to the actors on stage does not necessarily insure a reciprocal exchange between them. It is my belief that unless the actors clear their own paths of communication by renouncing preconceived ideas and intentions, they will not be able to engage in a true connection with the audience. The actors must search for POINTS OF CONNECTION with the audience - those shared moments, memories or feelings which often form part of our COLLECTIVE EXPERIENCE.

Ever since I can remember, the search for THE POINTS OF CONNECTION has been the strongest motivation for my work. My first theater explorations with El Teatro Xquis back in Caracas experimented with everything from bringing audience on to the stage to staging some sort of an immersive theater experience. In either setting, audience might have participated in the experience but they never stopped from being the “receivers” in this one-way connection. When living in San Francisco I attended many “improv” shows but I found that even if the actors were “feeding” from whatever the audience was throwing at them … they might as well been reading the lines from a teleprompter. The audience might have felt this “illusion” of being part of the experience but … did they really “connect” to the actors or whatever “content” was being “exposed” to them?
